In the world we find ourselves, “half a bread is better than none” our consolation saying to continue the “suffering but smiling lifestyle”. So what if it’s not bread but NGN10 biscuit??? These days a bread costs way above NGN80 so with the cost implication and calculation is half a biscuit still worth to be called half a bread and a continuity of suffering but smiling lifestyle?? Oh! Sorry we are in the part of the world that believes a corporate job solves the problem or better still, getting a corporate job is part of our “personal achievement”.
May I ask,
Are we actually living doing a 7-5 Job and not finding any form of self fulfillment or rather ‘achieving the real personal goals’
Pardon me please, what’s the essence of doing something you don’t like and you absolutely do not have much time to do what would be acclaimed to be yours or your achievement??? Surely, it’s for the half bread or half biscuit whatever situation is applicable.
Do not get me wrong please, it is good to work, it is in fact a beautiful thing to work when that even happens to be your goal or your dreams built around it and then you love what you do that’s what is called ‘Job Satisfaction’. In this instance, you are attaining both personal and company goals. This is a healthy relationship and goes a long way to building loyalty and continuity more on the part of the employee who has become a specialist in the job task overtime or an expatriate. The reverse is the case where just the company benefits and the pay gotten does not commensurate the effort devoted to the job. It even becomes saddening where what is stated on the contract of employment is not exactly what is being enacted. There are more working hours and weekend duties without Allowances. Workers have families and really any worker whom is made to do beyond what is stated on the contract of employment should be compensated handsomely.
Why should employees be loaded with work stretching beyond their capacity and it be termed Job description with guiding KPI’s (Key Performance Indicator) that must be met otherwise the employee is termed underperforming.
There seems to be no functional Labour regulatory body, is NLC (Nigeria Labor Congress) still even in existence??? with their indecisive stunts???
It actually does seem many companies in Nigeria do not value a proper Welfarism and Work Life Balance Activity. They mostly say they do or you should figure it out yourself during the course of the Interview (job recruitment process). The word interview in itself is a scam. Scam on both sides. The interviewer and the interviewee both parties play the role to impress each other directly or indirectly.
With all these especially with the increasing rate of stress level and the seemingly ‘heaven’ on earth (which we all know) those who can’t take the brunt anymore opt for a better defined solution.
Here is, why companies increasingly have High Rate of Employee Turnover
*Basic Incentives (some companies do not consider their employees worthy of Christmas gifts or birthday gifts)
*Unattainable KPI’s I.e Overwhelming Job tasks
*The Perception of Modern Slavery by the employees
*Poor Work Life Balance Schemes
*Poor Facilities to deliver Job tasks
*Poor Compensation plans
*Lagos Traffic & Stress
*The attitudinal disposition of the Boss
*Highly Demanding Job tasks (some jobs require all the days of the week and major festive days )
*The Heaven on Earth(where most Nigerians are running to)
*Establishment of Personal Venture
Working in the corporate world exposes its members to opportunities and knowledge. It is a wonderful experience but when it’s beginning to affect one’s peace of mind, there’s need to rethink, re strategize, pray, strike a balance and then note the effect of the following stated if it still is the same feeling, start thinking of a possible venture to venture into else you may lose yourself and live a life of another.
Point to Note: No food for a lazy man! Regardless of the situation, find a means of achieving both your passion and means of earning ‘legally’.
